Would You Give Up Your Home Theater?
My husband and I had to ask ourselves this question recently. We have the opportunity to aquire some much needed real estate for our business but it would require buying a home that we don't really need. Financially it would make more sense to sell the house we have and move into the new one. But the new one is out in the country providing a longer commute to work AND it doesn't have our home theater. So we have to decide how much that theater is worth to us. Are we willing to give up $100,000+ in new income in order to keep our theater we have now?
What would you do?
For some it would be obvious... build a new home theater in the new house. The problem is we have a definite attachment to the one we have now and the new house doesn't have a room to accommodate our design choices, we'd have to build on. Even though we'd be gaining real estate for our business, it won't provide enough income to do that. So we really would be giving up our entertainment mecca if we made this transaction.
I'll end the suspense. We have decided NOT to move and NOT to buy the other house. Even though our theater has an input cost of about $10,000 it seems to be worth at least $100,000 to us in convenience, beauty, and sentimental value.
Ah, I think I'll go watch a movie in my home theater... :)
